In class: vocabulary quiz; handout with new vocabulary - Hamlet 6 (copy below)
               at Ophelia's grave: ophelia's grave (5:21)

Discussion questions:
                1. Laertes asks of the priest: "What ceremony else?" (5.1.210). According to the priest, why is there no more formal ceremony for Ophelia's burial?
 His reply:
 Her obsequies have been as far enlarged
As we have warranty: her death was doubtful;
And, but that great command o'ersways the order,
She should in ground unsanctified have lodg'd
Till the last trumpet: for charitable prayers,
Shards, flints and pebbles should be thrown on her;
Yet here she is allow'd her virgin crants,
Her maiden strewments and the bringing home
Of bell and burial.
2. What does Hamlet publicly declare at Ophelia's gravesite?  is he sincere?

3. The scene ends with the following lines from Hamlet addressed to Laertes. What does he mean? Note especially the last line, as it's still often quoted.

HAMLET: Hear you, sir;
What is the reason that you use me thus?
I loved you ever: but it is no matter;
Let Hercules himself do what he may,
The cat will mew and dog will have his day.
