Wednesday, September 3 Welcome: course criteria sheet / expectations

Hi! I’m Ms. Gabi Basile, and I’m Mrs. Parker’s student teacher for Quarter 1! I hail from Poughkeepsie, NY, but am currently attending college at SUNY Geneseo. I’m in my fourth & final year of my undergraduate degree in English (Creative Writing track), and am working towards a certification in Adolescent English Education. As a student teacher, I will be watching and learning from Mrs. Parker’s teaching style, as well as teaching approximately two units of my own.

But with that out of the way— who am I?

First and foremost, I’m an artist. I’ve worked with a variety of mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor, graphite, charcoal, clay, polymer clay, glass, sheet metal, wire, beads… you name it, I’ve probably tried to make something creative with it.
And for me, this includes words. Writing, I believe, is an art: it’s sculpting words to create an image, an expression, something new. So as is typical –hopefully– for an aspiring English teacher, I also love to write and to read.
I am also a fencer, specializing in epee, and have been president of Geneseo’s Fencing Club for the past two years. I also recently traveled abroad to Korea to study Korean Language and Comparative Literature, both of which I found extremely fascinating, along with the lack of rats in the subway system (growing up near NYC, this was earth-shattering to me).

I’m so excited to be working with the students and families of SOTA, and I am here as a resource for anyone that needs it. I look forward to getting to know you, and your school community.

Communication is the foundation to our humanity.  The English Language Arts curriculum strives to
 make all students successful by the practice of those reading, writing and oral skills that promote 
proficiency. Our goal is their practical application to whatever further educational path the student 
chooses. This is accomplished through the undertaking of close, attentive reading in complex 
works of literature and non-fiction. Students will apply critical thinking and analytical skills 
through oral and written work. These will be augmented by vocabulary and grammar work. 
Upon the successful completion of the course, the student will receiveone graduation credit. 
In addition, English III students will be taking the English Language Arts Common Core
Exam in June 2017.

1 notebook specifically designated for English work.

This is the go-to place for students and parents for all class information, including handouts, readings
 and homework.The site is updated daily and accessible 24-7.  When students are absent, all material
can be accessed here.
*Parent Connect: The system is designed to improve communication between school and home
 to support student achievement. Through this secure online system, parents are able to check their 
child’s academic progress from any computer, any time. My grades are updated every 48 hours.
 Registration is through the SOTA website:
 http://www.rcsdk12.org/connectxp. So as to ensure a successful year, all parents are requested 
to register.Students also have their own accounts, which will allow them to stay up-to-date on their
 progress. This is accessed through their  mail. This is also the quickest way to reach me.


Late work policy: Per school policy, students with legal absences have ten days to make up 
assignments. I will accept late material for a 50% grade until the end of the marking period.

Grading:  Homework 15%, Class Work 35%, writing 50%
Please note the following school-wide classroom plan.
Be on time, Be prepared, Be engaged.
          Cell phones and all electronics are prohibited in ALL classrooms.
         To include but not limited to:  ear buds, headphones, IPODS.
The dress code will be strictly enforced.
         To include but not limited to:  hats, hoodies and bandanas, as well as what is prescribed by the school handbook and posters.
Disrespect/Disruption to the educational process is prohibited.
         To include but not limited to:  bullying, profanity, food consumption and personal grooming.
CONSEQUENCES:   To include but not limited to:
         Verbal/non-verbal warning/contact log
         Move the student’s seat
         Parent contact
         Lunch detention
         After school detention
        Conference with administrator
NON-NEGOTIABLES – Immediate removal from classroom
         To include but not limited to:  Fighting; both physical and verbal, vandalism, theft, chronic disruption, and suspicion of being under the influence of illegal substances.
SEVERE CONSEQUENCES:  To be determined by administration

Most weeks you will have a vocabulary or grammar assignment. 
This will be material related to classwork and will be assessed
the following week. The grade will count in the homework
category of 15%. If you have a legal absence, you will have 
10 days to make up the quiz to potentially receive full credit. 
If you are on a field trip, you must take
the quiz before the excursion, in order to 
receive full credit.

Format for the vocabulary quiz: There will be a total of 20 items.  The first 10 will be matching, and the second 10 will be filling in the appropriate word based upon the context of the sentence. For example:

Suggestion for learning the words, which you will see in your readings is to create flash cards. Remember this counts in the homework category: 10%
